FACULTY NEWS: Dr. Lori Cox

Lori Cox Han, Ph.D., professor, Department of Political Science, Wilkinson College, recently published an edited volume titled New Directions in the American Presidency (Routledge, 2011), which takes a current look at the various issues facing the presidency and provides a “state of the art” overview of current trends in the field of presidency research.  David Shafie, Ph.D., assistant professor, Department of Political Science, contributed one of the original essays to the volume titled “The Presidency and Domestic Policy.”

EVENT NEWS: It’s plain to see — readers still love their Jane

Hold onto your bonnets, Jane Austen fans. An out-and-out Austenpalooza is coming to Chapman University on Feb. 15, when Lynda Hall, Ph.D., professor of English and a scholar of 19th Century British literature, hosts “Austenalia,” a panel discussion featuring four novelists whose contemporary work picks up where Austen’s pen left off.

EVENT NEWS:Austenalia: A Panel Discussion with Jane Austen-Related Authors, Feb. 15

In celebration of the 200th anniversary of the publication of Jane Austen’s first novel Sense and Sensibility, Dr. Lynda Hall, Assistant Professor of English and 19th Century British Literature scholar, will moderate a panel discussion of contemporary authors inspired by Jane Austen’s work. Authors include: Diana Birchall, Mrs. Darcy’s Dilemma; Karen Joy Fowler, The Jane Austen Book Club; Syrie James, The Lost Memoirs of Jane Austen; and Laurie Viera Rigler, Confessions of a Jane Austen Addict and Rude Awakenings of a Jane Austen Addict. Book signing and refreshments will immediately follow the panel. Sponsored by Wilkinson College of Humanities and Social Sciences and The Department of English.

STUDENT NEWS: Art Students in Italy for January Class

Liliana Leopardi and Eric Chimenti took their art students on a travel course to Italy called, Rethinking Renaissance Visual Culture.

They studied in Florence, Sienna, Venice and Rome.

FACULTY NEWS: 2011 CCCC Braddock Award awarded to Anne-Marie Pedersen

Anne-Marie Pedersen, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, English, recently won a prestigious award from the Conference on College Composition and Communication, the 2011 CCCC Braddock Award for your article, “Negotiating Cultural Identities Through Language: Academic English in Jordan” which appeared in the December 2010 issue of College Composition and Communication. The Braddock award for this year will be presented at the CCCC Annual Convention in Atlanta on Friday, April 8, at the Awards/Recognition Reception. Congratulations Anne-Marie! 

ALUMNI NEWS: Giczy ('09) presented with the first Raymond J. Cunningham Prize for research paper

Hailey Giczy ('09) and Associate Professor of History Lee Estes flew to Boston and the Annual American Historical Association Conference, together with Hailey's mom, on Thursday,  January 6th.  Friday morning everyone woke early for a behind the scenes tour of the 1795 Charles Bullfinch Massachusetts State House just off the Boston Commons.  The tour was led by Phu Mai, a Chapman history graduate ('08), and now an aide for a state representative.  Afterwards, they had lunch at America's oldest restaurant, the Union Oyster House.  Friday evening at the AHA Annual Meeting Hailey was formally presented with the first Raymond J. Cunningham Prize for her research paper, "The Bum Blockade: Los Angeles and the Great Depression," by the retiring President of the AHA, Barbara Metcalf.  The prize also included a $200 check for Voces Novae, the journal in which Hailey's paper was published.  On Saturday Phu took everyone on an auto tour of the battlefields of Lexington and Concord as well as to the historic seaport of Salem where the famous witch trials took place.  Lee returned home Saturday evening and Hailey's mom on Sunday, but Hailey stayed around until Tuesday in order to take in more of Boston's historic sights.

FACULTY NEWS: Dr. Logan Esdale presented a paper at MLA Conference

Logan Esdale, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, English, recently presented a paper at the annual MLA Conference, which this year was held in Los Angeles. The paper, “The Bervin Fascicles,” was part of panel on contemporary re-imaginings of Emily Dickinson's writing. As well, last fall he published two book reviews, one on Reading Emily Dickinson’s Letters: Critical Essays, edited by Jane Donahue Eberwein and Cindy MacKenzie, published in The Emily Dickinson Journal, and the other on Catherine Morley’s The Quest for Epic in Contemporary American Fiction: John Updike, Philip Roth and Don DeLillo, published in Modern Fiction Studies

EVENT NEWS: Breakdown, curated by Julie Schustack, Jan. 24-Feb. 24

Breakdown is an exhibition of sculpture by artists working in a variety of traditional & non traditional materials including balloon, synthetic hair & tomatoes. Some of the work suggests the literal disintegration of the object while other pieces challenge the conventions of sculpture. Opening Reception: February 8th, 5:30pm-8pm.

FACULTY NEWS: American Indian Technology with Paul Apodaca, Jan. 15

Paul Apodaca (Navajo/Mixton), Ph.D., will discuss the technological developments of American Indians across two continents as well as how the use of American Indian resources during the Industrial and Scientific Ages changed the world.
Dr. Apodaca's lecture will give insights into the development of the technologies, perspectives, and material culture that contributed to the Space Age - for example, one of our most famous astronauts is an American Indian. "Lost knowledge is a glaring reality as we look around the world and glimpse ancient technologies."

ALUMNI NEWS: President Obama Chats with a Group in Falls Church, VA including Chapman Alum

Chapman University, Wilkinson College Political Science alum Nadar Baroukh ('04,'05) was elected mayor of Falls Church, VA. (see story here) in July 2010.

As part of his new job responsibilities, Mayor Baroukh was invited to President Barack Obama's backyard discussion on the Patient's Bill of Rights on September 22, 2010.

During his talk, President Obama observed that he and Mayor Baroukh share a name that means "blessing" - Check it out at the 2:50 mark.

A politically correct Huck Finn? Chapman scholars weigh in

News of a plan to publish a sanitized version of Mark Twain’s classic novel The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn has launched a heated debate across the country, just the sort of thing the sardonic bard himself might have enjoyed.
“I think Mark Twain would love this,” says Lynda Hall, Ph.D., assistant professor, Department of English, Wilkinson College of Humanities and Social Sciences, who teaches a freshman foundations course on banned books.

John Fowles Center 2011 Literary Forum

The John Fowles Center for Creative Writing promotes and advances the discipline of creative writing in all its aspects: fiction, poetry, drama, creative nonfiction and screenwriting. For fourteen years the center has invited international writers to Chapman as: Nobel Laureate, Wole Soyinka, Salman Rushdie, Maxine Hong Kingston among others. Below is a list of the 2011 literary series, which is devoted to Italian authors. All the events begin at 7 p.m. and are held in the Henley Reading Room on the second floor of the Leatherby Libraries. The readings and lectures are free and open to the public.
